Superhoney
Superhoney
June 26, 1999 @ Harpers Ferry, Allston
Once they had found their missing drummer (Allston parking is a treat,
ain’t it?), Boston’s premiere funksters got the night rolling with a slow
and dreamy opener which ended up cranking into the taught and slinky Funk
rocker “Tatse My Wine.” After a quick drop back to gentle smoke, Joanie
Flynn got the fire stoked again with the help of Paul Schultheis’s zen-zoned
keys and John Aruda’s Steely sax groove. The rest of the night combined
elements of Scott Watson’s bass-draggin’ bump, some Zydeco thump, “Smokin’”
Doug Sherman’s chokky wah-fed slow jam and more than a hit of pummelling
percussion thanks to Sean Nelson and the late (to the gig) Dean Johnston.
As the lyrics say, “This is Funk, Y’all.” And you best believe it!
Watch for Superhoneys new album, “No Standing,” coming soon!

Superhoney @ The 1999 WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble
May 21, 1999 @ The Middle East
Packing the stage and the room with their mad phat funk, Superhoney rocked
the Rumble with their four-fisted percussion, boomer bass lines, hot broad
horn, up-taught guitar, meticulous Moog and their striking lead singer,
Joan Pimentel-Flynn. Though Joan’s lyrics were occasionally lost in the
powerful chop and roll, her tender lovin’ soul and southern fried hot pant
Left Eye snap was undeniable. A few of the songs featured sparse
repetitive lyrics, but in most cases, what was said was not nearly as
important as how. As Joanie cooed through some maternally tender
spirituals, the audience paid respects to the vibe with utter silence. And
as she roared into “Super Duper Strong,” the lyrical truth was undeniable!
Unfortunately, her claim that “I just can’t lose when I set my mind to
win” did not prove so factual, as the mighty funk machine fell in the
semi-finals of ‘BCN’s star-maker. Undaunted, Pimentel-Flynn humbly
directed the applause amongst her band mates and with a defiant “Ungh!”
vowed to roar again.
